Southwest Victoria roadshow wraps up

The Treaty Advancement Commissioner, Jill Gallagher AO has completed a 5-day visit to communities across western Victoria, as part of the treaty process.

The Commissioner is setting up the Aboriginal Representative Body, which will set the 'ground rules' so communities can negotiate.

It will be made up of traditional owners, elected by Aboriginal people in Victoria.

"It was great to hear community's aspirations for treaty or treaties," said Ms Gallagher.

"It's really important that community knows the facts, and that community has a voice," she said.

"I'd like to thank all the organisations and people who hosted us and helped us," said Ms Gallagher.

The visit included:

  • Geelong
  • Colac
  • Warrnambool
  • Framlingham
  • Heywood
  • Hamilton

A scheduled gathering in Portland was postponed to best accommodate community needs.

The Commissioner will hold other gatherings across Victoria - including in the Grampians and Mallee areas in June.
