The timeframe for the election to set up the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria is being extended in response to community sentiment, the Treaty Advancement Commission has announced.
Candidate nominations will close Friday, 16 August, rather than Monday, 17 June.
“Over the past few weeks, community members have shared with me that the timing is a challenge, so we are adjusting the timeframe so that more people can participate,” said the Victorian Treaty Advancement Commissioner, Jill Gallagher.
“This is a process developed from scratch – an enormous piece of work that has never been tried before in Australia’s history.”
“Our commitment to achieving Treaties remains unchanged and the extension still allows for the Assembly to be established in this calendar year,” she said.
The updated schedule is:
4pm, Friday 16 August 2019: Candidate nominations close
Monday 16 September to Sunday 20 October 2019: Voting period
